The court reorganization and optimization (CRO) reform is one of the crucial priorities in ensuring efficient court management and administration in Moldova. As of January 1, 2017, the number of courts was reduced from 44 to 15, however the actual work is still carried out in 42 separate premises. This decision has been taken after the judiciary bodies determined that in 64% of the courts, the number of judges was under 6, while in other the number of judges was down to 1 or 2. Moreover, in 2015 the case workload was uneven ranging from 66 to 2,287 per judge. Consequently, the judiciary was exposed to significant unjustified costs for the maintenance and management of courts.
